As we gear up for Fall with our sweaters, pants, and pull-overs, the Nashville Zoo is getting ready for some fall fun, too! Below is a list of October events for the Nashville Zoo’s animals and patrons to enjoy.

Halloween and Animals

Believe it or not, animals can trick-or-treat, too! Don’t believe it? Visit the Nashville Zoo on Oct. 1. The animals will partake in a bit of trick-or-treating. Every year, the Nashville Zoo gives their animals Halloween-themed treats in pumpkins.
From crickets to Jell-O eyeballs, animals will receive their special treats when they are let out or during Keeper Talks, an informational session presented by a zoo keeper about specific animals at the Nashville Zoo. They will have Keeper Talks every 30 minutes from 9:30 am-2:30 pm. So if you’d like to learn about some of the cool animals at the Nashville Zoo and see how they trick or treat, head over to the ticket booth at the Nashville Zoo for an admissions ticket. This special event will last from 9 am-4 pm.

For more about the Keeper Talks’ topics or this event, visit the Nashville Zoo’s site.

Fall Gardening Class Series

Last spring, I wrote about the Davidson County Master Gardeners teaching informal gardening classes behind the Grassmere Historic Farm at the Nashville Zoo. This time, they are hosting fall gardening sessions. These sessions are free to Zoo patrons with an admission ticket to the Nashville Zoo. After 18 years of restoring and up keeping the gardens at the Grassmere Historic Farm, the Davidson County Master Gardeners are the perfect people to seek any gardening help. The Master Gardeners will answer patrons’ questions, hand out soil sample kits, handouts and more. Additionally, the Master Gardeners discuss useful gardening topics such as canning, seed saving, and fall preparation for spring planting.

If interested in attending these gardening classes, visit the Nashville Zoo every Saturday in October at 11 am. In case you can’t attend all sessions, below is a date breakdown of what topics will be covered on certain days:

  • Oct 1: Seed to Seed: An Introduction to Seed Saving
  • Oct 8: Saving the Monarchs
  • Oct 15: Yes, You Can Can: Canning and Preserving
  • Oct 22: Fall Preparation for Spring Planting

For more information regarding these sessions, visit the Nashville Zoo site.

Fall Break at the Nashville Zoo

Sure, a fall break is a week of no classes. But what if your child could spend fall break learning about different species at the Nashville Zoo? Well, it’s possible! Here’s how to get your child involved at the zoo. They have two camps available for different ages.

Native Navigators is the kids camp at the Nashville Zoo for ages 7-9. As a camper, kids will learn about different species, encounter animals, play games and participate in hands-on activities. Every day from 9 am-3 pm, your kid will discover native species and more.

The second camp is for teens. Is your teen an aspiring veterinarian? Perfect! The Nashville Zoo’s Veterinarian Camp is for them. Campers, ages 15-18, observe the Nashville Zoo’s vet team for two days. Although it is only two days, the amount of information they receive will further them in their pursuit of becoming a veterinarian. They will learn the ins and outs to animal procedures, tour the animal clinic and lab. Also, campers will be advised about what courses to take in school.

For pricing information and specifics about the fall camps, visit the Nashville Zoo’s site.
Senior Day

Seniors can get in on the fun, too! The Nashville Zoo will have its annual Senior Day on Oct. 5. Any time before 4 pm, seniors (65 and up) receive free admission and complimentary parking validation. There will be Keeper Talks and exhibits for Seniors to enjoy.

For more activities and Keeper Talks schedule, visit the Nashville Zoo’s site.

Boo at the Zoo

It is time for the Nashville Zoo’s annual Boo at the Zoo event. Starting Oct. 14, Zoo patrons and their children have ten nights to celebrate Halloween at the zoo. Boo at the Zoo is an annual event for children to take carousel rides and behind-the-scenes hayrides, haunted tours and go on candy trails to trick-or-treat. Patrons will get a chance to visit the talking pumpkin! Not only will this be spooky, fun experience, but the animal trails will remain open at a later time than usual. The Africa Field will close at 8:30 pm. The Shell Station will close at 7:30 pm. The Flamingo Lagoon will close at 8:30 pm. There will be a corn pit, dance parties and more. Every person is required to have a ticket, even children under 2. Tickets may be printed or shown on the phone.

Ticket prices vary, but there’s a special offer for the first weekend. During the first weekend, zoo members ticket price is $10 and non-members ticket price is $13. Children under 2 are free. No refunds or rainchecks. Boo at the Zoo will end on Oct. 30th.

*Costumes are encouraged! Adults, no spooky costumes or masks!*
